Public International Law - Secondary Sources: Commentaries and Other Books

Guide to locating articles, commentaries, and other sources on public international law.

Commentaries

For more detailed information about a specific treaty, you should consult a commentary.  Commentaries provide a detailed, article-by-article analysis, together with comprehensive citations to cases, related primary source material, as well as articles and books.

To locate a commentary in IUCAT, use keywords from the treaty name as a subject heading keyword search, combined with the title keyword “commentary.” For example, search for title: “commentary” and subject: “torture” to find “United Nations Convention Against Torture: A Commentary.”  (You must do this search using the Advanced Keyword Search form.)

Other Books

Use IUCAT to locate books and book chapters on your subject. You can either search title keywords (which will also search for individual chapater titles), or subject keywords using the Advanced Keyword Search template. If you are researching a particular treaty, use treaty title keywords as subject keywords, since treaty titles are assigned as subject headings.
