Transitioning from Westlaw Classic to WestlawNext: KeyCite

This guide is designed to help you make the transition from Westlaw Classic to WestlawNext.

KeyCite Searching

While WestlawNext does not have a search by citation box as Classic does, you can run a KeyCite search from the main search box.  To do this, type KeyCite: followed by your citation (ex: KeyCite: 5 u.s.c.a. 552).  This search will take you directly to the Negative Treatment tab of a case, or the History tab if no negative treatment exists.

KeyCite Symbols

Yellow - the document has some negative treatment

Red - the document is no longer good law for at least one point of law

Blue Stripe - the document has been appealed to the US Courts of Appeal or US Supreme Court (excludes appeals originating from agencies)

KeyCite on WestlawNext

KeyCite is more fully integrated into the page on WestlawNext than it was on Classic.  Whenever viewing a document that has attached KeyCite information, you will see a selection of tabs across the top of the page.

  • The Negative History tab shows up on cases and covers any other primary source that has negatively cited or affected your case.
  • The History tab tracks the history of your document, for case law this includes lower court decisions.  For statutes it collects some legislative history.
  • The Citing References tab collects all document which cite your document. This is the most comprehensive tool.
  • The Context & Analysis tab includes several things, including cross references and a variety of secondary sources.
