Search Strategies: Westlaw, Lexis Advance, Bloomberg Law: Bloomberg Law

A guide to the three major legal research platforms

Distinguishing Features

Dockets

Bloomberg Law gives you access to an impressive number of court dockets.  Dockets can be accessed from the Getting Started box, under the Search & Browse tab, or under the Litigation & Dockets tab.

Company Profiles

Prior to venturing into the legal research realm, Bloomberg was known for its news and business resources.  These features are included within Bloomberg Law, giving you access to very detailed company and people profiles to enrich your legal research.

Practice Centers

Bloomberg Law has Practice Centers for Antitrust, Banking & Finance, Bankruptcy, Corporate/M&A, Employee Benefits, Health, Intellectual Property, Labor & Employment, Securities, & Tax.  These Practice Centers bring together information from across the Bloomberg Law platform to facilitate research in these specific areas.  Features of the Practice Centers include specialized searches and lists of pertinent laws and regulations, opinions and dockets, books, treatises, law reports, and more.

Searching: GO Bar

The GO bar is the main searching format for Bloomberg Law.  As you type in your search, the GO bar creates a list of search suggestions for you, including

  • All Legal Content
  • Citation Search
  • Court Opinions by Case Name
  • Dockets by Party Name
  • News Search.

Based on your search terms, it will also list the most cited court opinions, and will suggest companies and people related to your search as well.  You also of course have the option of finishing your search string in the GO bar and clicking <GO>.

A note on search results: Although most databases return search results in relevance order, search results in Bloomberg Law appear in reverse chronological order, meaning that the top hits are not necessarily those most relevant to the search you performed.

Search & Browse

From the tabs across the top, the Search & Browse tab is another option for searching the content in Bloomberg Law.  You have the option to search:

  • All Legal Content
  • Specialized searches such as Dockets, News, or Court Opinions, or
  • Browse content such as the BNA Law Reports, Books & Treatises, and Statutes & Regulations

The search box that appears when you select content to search under the Search & Browse tab will vary.  Sometimes you will get an expandable tree of resources to search, for example jurisdictions for searching legislation.  In these instances you also have the option to search for a specific resource, as well as a few filtering options, such as Date.  In other instances, such as a Docket search, you will have different boxes to fill out for your search, rather than an expandable tree of options; for instance, you might enter a specific court, keywords, and/or a docket number, or search by party name.
