Resources for Maurer Law Journal Members: Perma.cc

Resources on cite checking, sourcing, note writing, and more

What is it?

Perma.cc is a web archiving solution designed for the legal publishing industry.  It is a free tool created by Harvard Law that many law journals have begun using to preserve the integrity of URLs cited in footnotes.

Why does this matter? One of the missions of libraries is to preserve materials in their collections for all to access, so when an author cites to print material, chances are very good that the material can be found; but with electronic materials, website owners do not share a similar mission, and thus we are finding an increasing rate of link rot in modern scholarship. Rotten links impede the ease of readership for articles, thus finding a solution to this problem aids modern scholarship in general. Perma.cc helps to combat this problem.

Setting Up Your Journal to Use Perma

To get started with Perma, contact Ashley Ahlbrand, the Associate Director for Public Services, or John Moreland, the Student Services Librarian.  Journal accounts need to be associated with a library, and we have already added the Maurer Law journals to the law library's Perma account.  We will create accounts for the journal members who will be using Perma and are happy to provide training as well.
