Circulation: Carrel Rules

Carrel Rules

RULES FOR CARREL HOLDERS

  1. All carrel holders must be law students enrolled in classes at the Maurer School of Law. During the summer sessions, non-law graduate students may apply for carrels.
  2. Two people are assigned to each carrel. Please be considerate of your carrel mate. Leave equal space for checking out materials, and clean up papers, food, etc. before leaving your carrel.
  3. Carrel assignments are made for the academic year. However, carrels assigned to December graduates will automatically be cleared unless you make arrangements with the Head of Circulation and Patron Services to extend your carrel privileges until the bar examination.
  4. All carrels will be cleared and reassigned immediately after spring semester finals, unless renewed for the summer. A notice will be posted before spring finals announcing the deadline for summer renewal. If not renewed, all personal belongings must be removed from carrels before the deadline. All personal belongings remaining on unassigned carrels after the deadline will be discarded.
  5. To charge material to a carrel, bring items to the circulation desk and tell the desk attendant your carrel number and letter (e.g. 3-34A). A list of carrel assignments is kept at the circulation desk. The desk attendant will charge the material to your carrel. To discharge material from a carrel, turn the carrel card upside down so that the words "To be Discharged" are exposed, and leave the item and card on the carrel, or return the item to the circulation desk. Material charged to your carrel must remain on your carrel.
  6. If you wish to take circulating material home that is already charged to your carrel, bring the item to the circulation desk to have it discharged from the carrel and charged to your ID.
  7. Books from the reference and reserve collections and any other uncharged library books will be removed daily from the carrels. Home-use, reserve, and interlibrary loan books that are charged to you will not be removed from your carrel if you leave them there; however, you are responsible for renewing these books and will be held responsible for replacement charges if they are stolen from your carrel. The Law Library will not be held responsible for any personal items or books obtained from other libraries which are taken from your carrel.
  8. After two weeks, a book may be recalled if needed by another patron. Upon receipt of a recall notice, please return the book with the recall notice to the circulation desk. The book will automatically be removed one week from the date of the recall notice if not returned sooner. A second recall may be placed on the book so that you can check it out to your carrel when it becomes available. Books recalled for use by another patron will not be automatically returned to your carrel.
  9. Please notify the circulation office if material is missing from your carrel. This is important so that a search can be initiated for the missing item.
  10. Materials must be arranged on the carrels in an orderly manner with all spines visible. Material accumulated on unauthorized shelves and other areas will be cleared.
  11. Carrels have been placed in a definite order and must remain in that order. Carrels which are moved out of sequence will be cleared and reassigned. If there are any problems with the location of your carrel, please bring it to the attention of the Head of Circulation and Patron Services.
  12. Coffee pots and other electrical heating appliances are not allowed in the library. These items will be removed and held at the circulation desk where they may be claimed.
  13. Because of the electronic window shades located on the side of the library (by the atrium), nothing may be placed on the window sills. Even small items left on the sill will interfere with the movement of the shades.
  14. Each carrel is equipped with an electrical outlet and a light. The switch for the light is located beneath the carrel shelf. Please report any problems with the lights or outlets at the circulation desk.
  15. Extra furniture around the carrel is not allowed. Keep decorative items, plants, etc. to a minimum and keep floor space clear. Do not put tape on the library walls or on the outside of carrels as this will cause permanent damage to the finishes.
  16. Laptop computers may be used at carrels, but desktop computers are not allowed. Each carrel is equipped with a docking bolt to secure your computer. You are responsible for providing a security cable. Even when properly secured, it is recommended that you avoid leaving your computer unattended for substantial amounts of time. The library will not be held responsible for theft of or damage to computer equipment left at carrels or elsewhere in the Library.
  17. The wireless network may be accessed from all carrels.
  18. Carrel privileges may be revoked if you fail to comply with any of these rules.
