Current Awareness & Alerting Resources: Westlaw

This guide is devoted to current awareness and alerting resources available at Indiana University's Maurer School of Law Library. It will show you how to create, edit, and manage alerting services in a variety of e-resources.

IMPORTANT NOTE about WestlawNext Alerts

**Thomson Reuters has updated the appearance, process, and features of WestlawNext alerts.  The information on this page reflects these changes.

A training session will be held for interested FACULTY to assist in getting everyone up and running with the new alerts.

STUDENTS who would like help setting up alerts in WestlawNext should stop by the Reference Office for assistance.

Migration of Alerts from Westlaw Classic to WestlawNext

For faculty and staff, all existing alerts on the classic Westlaw platform have been automatically migrated over to WestlawNext.  Thus, these alerts should now appear when you access your alerts in WestlawNext.

How to Create a Newsletter

WestlawNext's new current awareness tool kit includes a newsletter feature.  Using this tool, you can create customized newsletters that can be shared with others in the law school community.  A newsletter can contain different kinds of alerts and you can select how frequently it is received.  Within the newsletter, all results that are available in WestlawNext are hyperlinked for easy retrieval and review.

To create a newsletter, start on the Alerts page:

  1. Select the "Newsetters" link on the left side of the page.  This will bring up the Newsletter management screen.
  2. Click "Create Newsletter" to begin the step-by-step creation wizard for your newsletter.
  3. Complete all four steps (Basics, Select Alerts, Customize Delivery, and Schedule Newsletter) and click continue after each.  You (and any colleagues you've designated) will begin receiving your newsletter in accordance with the delivery schedule you selected.

Types of WestlawNext Alerts

Academic subscriptions on WestlawNext have 4 different alert options:

  • WestClip - runs a terms and connectors or Boolean search through selected document and database types.
  • KeyCite - monitors the status of cases, statutes, and regulations and automatically sends updates to you when there has been a change that potentially affects the validity of these documents.
  • Docket Alert - keeps track of when new cases are filed that meet your specifications for jurisdiction, case type, party, attorney, etc.
  • Publication Alert - sends you new issues of publications when they become available on WestlawNext.

Any of these alerts can be set up using Westlaw's alert management screen.  For detailed instructions, consult the How to Create an Alert box on this page.
