Getting to know IU's new learning management system

What is Canvas and Why Should I Start Using It?

Canvas is the new learning management system (LMS) at Indiana University.  For years, we have been using Oncourse as our LMS; but starting with Fall 2016, course sites will only be created in Canvas.

Existing content in Oncourse will be "read only" starting September 1st, 2016, meaning that you will be able to access your Oncourse content and download it, but you won't be able to create new Oncourse content or sites, nor will you be able to edit existing Oncourse content.

This guide highlights the major features of Canvas and is meant to assist you in your transition to this platform.  If you have any questions or require any assistance with Canvas, please contact Ashley Ahlbrand, your Educational Technology Librarian.

Getting Started: Canvas Dashboard

When you first log into Canvas, you're taken to your User Dashboard:

This is an integrated access point for all Canvas sites you're a part of.  To access Courses, Calendar, or Inbox, use the menu on the left.  To access a Canvas course, click Courses from the left-hand menu, and click the title of the course you want to access.

Tip: For quick access, you can have courses display on your dashboard, as seen above.  To do this, click on Courses, then All Courses, and from the list of courses that display, click the star next to any courses you want to display on your dashboard.
