IUCAT

This research guide will navigate you through IUCAT, show you how to access it, explore the different ways to search it, and explain how to interpret the results you get.

Elements of a Catalog Record

A catalog record gives you a lot of information.  Here are the features that will be of greatest importance to you:

  • Title - title of the catalog item, and author
  • Format (book, online source, serial, etc.)
  • Publication information including edition, publication location and date,
  • Notes - varies, but can tell you chapter titles, added features, such as indexes, etc.
  • Subject Headings - another way to search IUCAT to find similar titles that fall under the same subject heading
  • Holdings - tells you where to find the item
    • Library - which Indiana University Campus and library holds the item
    • Call number - the alpha-numeric identifier assigned to the item; items in the libraries' collections are arranged alphabetically by call number
    • Location - where in the library's collection to find that item (ex: reference, general collections)

Catalog Record Tips

Once you understand the layout, cataloging records are fairly straightforward.  However, there are a few things to know about:

  • ALF - ALF stands for Auxiliary Library Facility, another building on campus where libraries store certain items from their collections.  If the location of the item you're looking for says ALF, you should see a red button below the location information that says Request ALF Item.  Click this button, select Blmgtn - Law Library (B-LAW) as your pickup library, and click submit.
    • If you place your ALF order before noon, your item should arrive at the Law Library around 4 PM.
    • If you place your ALF order after noon, your item should arrive at the Law Library around 4 the next day.
    • You will receive an email when your ALF item arrives - you can pick it up at the circulation desk.
  • Request Delivery - If you want a book or other catalog item that is housed at another library or campus, click the Request Delivery button.  Choose Blmgtn - Law Library (B-LAW) as your pickup library, and click Request Delivery.
    • Request Delivery items usually arrive within a week of the request.
    • You will receive an email when your item arrives - you can pick it up at the circulation desk.

Accessing Online Resources

Online Resources include several types of catalog items, including databases, e-books, and online periodicals.  When you look at a catalog record for an online resource, you will access it from the URL (web address) provided in the cataloging record, under Description.  Often several campuses and libraries have access to the same online resource; you will want to select the [Bloomington] URL.  A box will then pop up asking you to select a campus.  Click Bloomington to proceed to that online resource.

NOTE: If you are having difficulty accessing an online resource, please stop by the Reference Office at the Law Library and one of the reference librarians will assist you.
